4. FEATURE ARTICLE:
THREE 'V's' TO TURN AROUND YOUR THINKING -- AND YOUR RESULTS
1. Visioning v. Visualizing
Jody has just read The Science of Getting Rich (SOGR) for the
first time and is enthusiastically getting into the process of
letting imagination run free with no limits. It's amazing the
ideas that are bubbling up -- all the wonderful possibilities.
Dale's new to the book and its principles, too, and completely
determined to apply this new knowledge. Dale's finding it a bit
difficult, though, and is thinking hard, trying to come up with a
good "clear mental image."
Which one of our SOGR newbies is "visualizing"
and which is "visioning?"
And what difference does it make?
While Mr. Wattles doesn't use either term in SOGR, he does refer
to both of these processes in talking about the importance of
holding that clear mental image.
Visioning is actually what we're after first and the process of
visualizing can be useful later on, once the real VISION comes
through. Here's the difference:
Visualizing is when you are using conscious thought -- your
intellect -- to create details of a mental picture. You're
thinking it through, mapping it out, experiencing it in your
mind. And that's very useful.
Generally, when we go to that process first, we tend to make it
laborious and difficult. We turn it into WORK.
But visioning is when you simply give yourself permission and
take the time to get still and peaceful, and to "go within" in
delicious anticipation. Then, with joy and appreciation, you
begin to notice the images that flash into your mind.
These images and ideas come from your True Self, from your
connection to All The Mind There Is (the Universe, God, Higher
Power, the Formless, Whatever Name You Choose). Those flashes of
inspired vision show you your deepest, truest heart's desire.
So you let them arise and simply watch them flow.
There's NO EFFORT involved at all. It's just lovely, lively,
exciting and peaceful at the same time. A delightful kind of
inner exploration that reveals to you the answers that are
already within you from the start.
Most of the time (up 'til now) we've tended to discount those
flashes, dismissed them as unreasonable, silly, immature, and the
like. We stuff them down -- if we even let ourselves notice them
in the first place.
But pay attention to them. That's where all the good stuff is!
Then, once you "catch the vision," go with it. Act upon it --
that's inspired action.
Personally, I can't think of a single time in
my life when I've regretted acting on my
intuition -- on a "hunch" or a "gut feeling"
about a person or opportunity.
But I can DEFINITELY think of times when I
didn't follow through on an intuitive lead
and later sure wished I had!
(Know what I mean? I thought so!)
One of my favorite teachers, Florence Scovel Shinn (see more from
her in this edition's "Quotations"), says: "Never force a picture
by visualizing. Let the Divine Idea flash into your conscious
mind. Then the student is working according to the Divine
Design."
Flash and flow, not force -- that's the way to a POWERFUL clear
mental image!

2. Wow! v. Whew!
(Or, How To Relax, Enjoy, and Appreciate instead of Struggling)
When you let your "clear mental image" just bubble up in the way
described above instead of trying to force it, and when you
really let yourself trust the Law of Attraction and choose to
keep yourself in tune with that joyous image (instead of focusing
on the lack of it or turning your thoughts to the appearances of
things that don't please and delight you), then you'll soon
discover another wonderful benefit:
Any ACTION for you to take will make itself clear to you as well.
And even better, it'll be easy, flowing, enjoyable. Even FUN.
I know that when I let a clear mental image of what I want arise
from within my heart of hearts and then I let myself focus on
THAT, let myself feel all the joy and enthusiasm of THAT, let
myself begin to feel appreciation and gratitude for THAT right
now, and let myself go and flow into joyful anticipation and
delight, then ... WOW!
In other words, just relax and have FUN with all this!
"Whew," I think, is quite the opposite of that. We all seem to
want to make this so difficult, but the real "SECRET" is that
it's not at all if we'll just LET it be fun and easy.
Here's one of my favorite, most useful quotations (which I've
mentioned here before):
"How would I be doing this differently if I
were willing to let it be easy?"
I ask myself that several times a day, whenever I catch myself
making something difficult or stressful. Try it!

3. "Big" Things v. "Little" Things
Mr. Wattles writes: "Never allow yourself to be disappointed,"
and goes on to tell the story of a man whose business deal didn't
work out the way he planned initially, but when he stuck to his
vision as the REAL Truth, everything blossomed beautifully.
It's kind of funny how we read that, and we think it makes good
sense, and we say we believe it, but then something doesn't SEEM
to go the way we want and what do we do?
We get disappointed!
Which means we've just done a mental 180 and are now heading AWAY
FROM whatever it is we desire to be, do, or have.
(Talk about self-defeating!)
Lately I'm thinking if there were just ONE THING I could sort of
pour into everyone's heads here, it would be this:
My friend, STOP thinking about, talking about,
declaring, making public, holding in your own
mind ANY kind of statement of "not enough,
not much, not yet."
For so many of us, I would bet BIG money that ...
... it's that very statement, that very
thought, that very focus on absence or lack
that is holding you back from fulfillment.
And know this, too:
When it seems like, oh, I've been visioning this "big" thing, but
all that's showing up so far are these "little" things, please
realize ...
The so-called "little" things are just the
forerunners of the "big" ones!
So don't downplay them. Be immensely grateful for them. Sing
their praises and keep your focus on how wonderful they are.
They're like the twigs and leaves in the water and the smell of
dirt in the air that came to the early seagoing explorers.
They're the signs that landfall is approaching and success is
just ... right ... there.
It's HERE!
They're the beautiful messengers that announce the imminent
appearance of whatever it is that you have asked for and been
given.
Unless, of course, you turn it all away with your insistence that
it's not enough, not much, not yet.

6. WRAP-UP: HOW TO BE YOUR OWN BEST FRIEND
Frequently, I hear students of SOGR (in the forum or in my email)
making statements like these:
"I guess I have a long way to go ..."
"I'm not perfect at this yet ..."
"I seem to be a slow learner ..."
But you know, those declarations -- and other, similar ones --
probably aren't the kinds of ideas we really want to be
affirming! ;-D
So here's a suggestion:
Catch yourself doing stuff RIGHT instead of
wrong, and then APPRECIATE and acknowledge
yourself for it!
Like this:
Instead of statements like the ones above, how about, "Hey! I get
it! This is real progress. I'm getting so much better at noticing
when I get off-track and getting back on-target quickly."
Really. Think about it. If a good friend needed your support, you
wouldn't say, "Sheesh, you sure have a long way to go," or
"You're a long way from perfect."
You'd offer words of ENCOURAGEMENT, right?
So go be your own best friend and talk to yourself that
best-friend way. Always.
Because, my friend, you are SO worth it!
